“No pain, no gain?”

Smile

Going through my daily web surfing I found a nice sentence on Wikipedia’s Second Language Acquisition page:

“The process of language learning can be very stressful, and the impact of positive or negative attitudes from the surrounding society can be critical.”

Please try to recall your school days, which were your top-grade subjects? Did you like these subjects? Which subjects did you struggle with? Did you like going to those classes? I bet the answer to the last question was a “NO!”.

Learning has to be fun, any type of learning has to be fun. I think language learning needs special attention here, it’s a long process with many trial-and-error moments so ‘the fun factor’ is crucial to keep one going and to lose inhibition.

How do you think language learning could be fun?

One aspect of language learning I find fun is the uniqueness of a particular language. How language reflects a culture and it’s values. Why, for example, in Japanese do the words “hot” and “thick” have the same phonetic sound “atsui.” For me learning vocabulary this way has a certain stickiness which helps retention. I guess it is a kind of “did you know…?” strategy which creates one sort of need to learn. Doesn’t do much for fluency tho:).

Curious facts such as those increase the interest and whatever increases interest is quite positive. But, you are correct, fluency practice is needed to compliment as well.

My partner understands Japanese from all of the various Manga movies!
He is a Manga fanatic so maybe something for msf?

In fact, the best learning experience is that which directly relates to the individual student’s personal interest.
You learn best what you like to learn.
And you learn best when you have fun with it.
